Hair Care with Jordan Essentials

Ask any woman the one thing that frustrates her the most about her appearance and the top three responses you will hear are her weight, her complexion, and her hair.  When it comes to hair, we are all unique. Color, style, thickness, porosity, texture, and length are just a few defining characteristics which define challenges such as dry hair, frizzy hair, oily hair, hair that is easily tangled, hair that goes flat, and hair that is going grey, to name just a few.

Unfortunately, all too often, hair care products contain a vast array of ingredients that may create the illusion of taming our frustration with our hair, but are actually dangerously toxic to our health.  And with science showing that the skin absorbs many substances into the bloodstream within 26 seconds of contact, why risk putting such toxic ingredients on our head, so close to our brain? Shampoos, conditioners, styling products, colorants, and treatments contain on average up to 12 toxic ingredients that have been found to contain carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting, and neurotoxic properties.

How is this possible, you may ask?  Isn’t the FDA regulating these ingredients and the products on the market?  Well, the answer is yes and no. Hair Care products fall into the Beauty Industry category and this industry actually makes their own regulations.  According to the FDA’s website: “Companies and individuals who manufacture or market cosmetics have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of their products.  Neither the law nor FDA regulations require specific tests to demonstrate the safety of individual products or ingredients.”

So when choosing products to help your hair look beautiful, it’s helpful to go with a company you trust, who works hard to use only the best possible ingredients that are carefully tested to be completely nontoxic.  If you want the best possible products for yourself and your loved ones, it is recommended to avoid any products that contain the following:

SLS (sodium laureth sulfate):

A common ingredient that helps give shampoos and conditioners that beautiful lather we love so well.  However, all that lather may make bathing more fun, but it is not good for the hair, skin, or body. SLS is a surfactant and is also an insecticide, found to increase the risk of cancer, liver damage, skin rashes, depression, and eye damage.

Formaldehyde and Quaternium-15:

Used as preservatives, these ingredients have been found to be very toxic and extremely carcinogenic.

Parabens:

Parabens are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and have been found to be estrogen disruptors, increasing the risk of some cancers including breast cancer.

Synthetic fragrances:

Synthetic fragrances may smell good in the short term, making the product somewhat appealing, however, they also have been found to clog the lymphatic system, increase the risk of organ toxicity, and may cause endocrine disruption.

Polysorbates:

Used to help dissolve oil additives and fragrance to conditioners, you’re best steering clear of this one if you can.  Polysorbates tend to leave a residue on the skin and scalp which can disrupt the skin’s natural pH and destroy the natural protective barrier of the scalp.  The body’s reaction may be to produce more sebum to try to restore balance, causing oily hair and/or skin, among other potentially harmful side effects.

Triclosan:

Found in both shampoos and conditioners, and some styling products, triclosan can accumulate in the fat cells, keeping the body in a state of toxicity, contributing to headaches, migraines, endocrine disruption, and irritation of the skin, eyes, and lungs.  Also found to be a contributor to hair loss.

Dimethicone:

This is another common ingredient in Hair Care that you’ll want to watch carefully to avoid.  It is a silicone oil that can make the scalp and skin dry and irritated, while forming an almost plastic-like barrier on the skin and hair.  This barrier then traps bacteria, sebum, and impurities, causing a range of side-effects such as skin irritation, dandruff, dry and frizzy hair, eye irritation, allergy symptoms, and organ toxicity.  It is also non-biodegradable so is not good for the environment.
